The Art of Growing and Showing Sweet Peas.

Sweet Pea.

In the crazy days of Sweet Pea growing back in the 1950, there were many good books written about the cultivation of this wonderful flower. These books were the sole domains of the exhibition Sweet Pea growers, who had more knowledge than I will ever have on the Sweet Pea subject. That is the exhibition type of Sweet Pea flower; we have always grown many hundreds of thousands of plants purely for the Sweet Pea Cut Flower market.

The cultivation of this most wonderful flower is so very easy to do, all the fantasy Sweet Pea books will only confuse the novice Sweet Pea Grower and put them off Growing Sweet Peas completely.

At the very outset we are confronted, as is not unusual in Sweet Pea gardening, with conflicting opinions upon the most momentous point (momentous at least to the ever-increasing body of Sweet Pea growers) of soil and site. The experts tell you that you must on no account grow Sweet Peas on the same ground year after year; in fact, you must grow them on a fresh piece of land every year. If not, then the plants will succumb to the diseases like Pea mould, also the promise of stunted growth, short flower stalks, and poor, puny blossoms.

Many Sweet Pea growers I have spoken to have been growing and flowering there Sweet Pea plants in the same location in there gardens for 10 years without any problems.

This is not a sweet Pea fantasy woven in the depths of imagination, but a simple tale based on facts that have many times come to my notice. I can look out of my window at a plot of Sweet Peas that have been planted in the same ground for 3 year and really look none the worse for it.
We have found it necessary to rotate the Sweet Pea beds on our commercial holdings; we do alternate Sweet Pea with a Potato crop, which is mainly because the Potato has a deep root system that will keep the land friable. Also the Potato root does have quite a lot of minerals and trace elements enclose within, these elements are left in the ground after the crop is lifted. Upon lifting the Potato crop, it is just a simple matter of incorporating some well-rotted Organic Vegetable Compost and forking over, the site is then ready for sowing your Sweet Pea Seeds for the next season.
